July favorites: six of the best emails from our inbox

Alchemy Worx Birthday emails, refer-a -friend programs, unusual send times…this line up of six special emails from July has a bit of everything. Take a look and get inspired for your own campaigns.

Jetsetter’s benefit-led refer-a-friend

Subject line: Introducing our new rewards program

This refer-a-friend email from Jetsetter is a great example of effective email copywriting. It uses a small amount of copy to stress benefits and drive action – so rather than just saying ‘earn account credit’, the email positions the scheme as a chance to ‘travel the world on our dime.’ It also ends on an open-ended question that encourages readers to imagine where they could go, meaning they become further invested in the opportunity. We also like the clean design with large mobile-friendly CTAs and fonts.

American Apparel’s promotion for night owls

Subject line: Are you awake?

We liked the strategy of this flash promotion from American Apparel. Rather than being concerned with the best send time throughout the day, American Apparel did something completely different and targeted their subscribers at night with the intriguing subject line ’Are you awake?.’ This is a mysterious question that everyone can identify with and, with fewer emails arriving at this time, it becomes harder to ignore. It’s a great example of how easy it can be to mix your program up and catch the attention of your subscribers.

SecretSales’ high-frequency conversion series

Subject line: 7 hours left: 30% off just for you with code COUNTDOWN30

This email was the last part of a high-frequency series to try and convert a subscriber to their first purchase. We received one email per day for four days prompting us to use a discount, with the discount increasing from 20% to 30% off for the final email. The creative remained the same throughout, with simple copy and a sense of urgency. The subject lines also remained fairly similar, but we would have tried more variation to engage subscribers, particularly non-openers.

Late Night London’s celebratory birthday email

Subject line: Your 4 birthday presents %FName%!

This birthday email from a London nightclub venue strikes exactly the right tone for encouraging the subscriber to celebrate. It leads with personalization at the top, and focuses on four birthday presents rather than one, which is a nice way to stand out from usual birthday offers. It promotes their services without detracting from the celebratory theme, and the whole thing feels carefully considered, from the use of imagery to the punchy copy.

Nations Photo Lab’s content-rich newsletter

Subject line: The Sunday newsletter: Christmas in July sale, a blast from the past, a 10-second photography tip and more

The range of content packed into this newsletter is quite impressive – from a promotional offer to an interesting article from an outside source, an insider tip and a social media push. This means the email has the ability to drive conversions, establish the brand as an authority and member of the photography community, and drive engagement with customers. That’s not bad value for a communication that cost practically nothing to send!

Subject line: It’s 5 O’clock somewhere

We like the seasonal and inventive theme given to this Joseph Joseph email. They’ve turned a list of kitchen accessories into a summer-appropriate cocktail –making masterclass.
